Stick-Slip Dynamics in a Granular Material With Varying Grain Angularity

چکیده
Experiments, simulations, and theoretical treatments of granular materials typically feature circular or elliptical grains. However, grains found in natural systems often have flat faces that introduce local rotational constraints; these constraints been shown to affect, for example, the jamming transition, discontinuous shear thickening, ordered states colloids thermalized In this work, we experimentally investigate effects grain angularity on stick-slip dynamics. A weighted slider is pulled by a spring over gravity-packed bed composed polygonal with varying angularity. We find packings triangular square higher strengths than pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, disks. Additionally, as number sides increases, sticking periods, during which remains motionless while force it become shorter average, material yielding at smaller applied stresses. Lastly, dilation medium periods tends be larger angularity, part because presence stilt-like columnar structures prop up. report measurements pulling slider, particle dynamics slip events, properties force-bearing contact networks identified via photoelasticity. Our findings indicate high (pentagons, squares, triangles) leads differences grain-scale flow macroscopic bulk materials. experiments also continuous change decreasing limit approached.

Stick-slip dynamics of a granular layer under shear.
Stick-slip regime of shear granular flows is studied theoretically and numerically. Numerical experiments are carried out for a thin Couette cell using soft-particle molecular dynamics code in two dimensions. We apply order parameter theory of partially fluidized granular flows and find a good agreement with simulations and experiments by Nasuno et al.
متن کاملStick-slip fluctuations in granular drag.
We study fluctuations in the drag force experienced by an object moving through a granular medium. The successive formation and collapse of jammed states give a stick-slip nature to the fluctuations which are periodic at small depths but become "stepped" at large depths, a transition that we interpret as a consequence of the long-range nature of the force chains and the finite size of our exper...
متن کاملFiber bundle model with stick-slip dynamics.
We propose a generic model to describe the mechanical response and failure of systems which undergo a series of stick-slip events when subjected to an external load. We model the system as a bundle of fibers, where single fibers can gradually increase their relaxed length with a stick-slip mechanism activated by the increasing load. We determine the constitutive equation of the system and show ...

متن کاملBoundary conditions and event scaling of granular stick-slip events
We describe experiments on stick-slip failure of a granular material within a linear shear cell. The experiments are performed in a quasi-two-dimensional photoelastic granular material which is sheared via a slider block and spring moving at a constant velocity. The apparatus can provide either constant-volume or constant dP/dV boundary conditions on the aggregate, and we observe boundary-condi...
